John Hurt – Alien and The Elephant Man – dies from cancer, age 77

The Film Doctor team send our love to the family, friends and spirit of  John Hurt, the Alien, The Elephant man and Harry Potter actor who has passed away at the age of 77 from cancer.







Sir John Vincent Hurt grew up in England and started  his career by attending legendary drama school RADA before beginning to pick up small television roles.




His first major role was as Richard Rich in a Man for All Seasons in 1966 opposite Orson Welles and Robert Shaw. By 1978 he had won a Golden Globe and BAFTA for his turn in Midnight Express and just two years later his jaw-dropping performance as John Merrick in David Lynch’s The Elephant Man (1980) won him yet another BAFTA award as well as both Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations.

Other roles include the voice of the rabbit leader in animation Watership Down, Kane in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror classic Alien and as Winston Smith in Nineteen Eighty-Four.

In the 2000s he played Harry Potter wand-making wirard Mr. Ollivander as well as characters in comic book movie Hellboy and spy thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. He is survived by his wife Anwen Rees-Meyers and his two children.
