Oscar-winning production designer Paul Sylbert dies, age 88

The Film Doctor team send our love to the family, friends and spirit of Paul Sylbert, the Oscar-winning production designer who worked with legendary directors Alfred Hitchcock, Mike Nichols, Milos Forman and Elia Kazan.







Paul won the Academy Award for Best Art Direction in 1978 for Warren Beatty and Buck Henry’s version of Heaven Can Wait.  He was also nominated in 1991 for his work on Barbra Streisand’s The Prince of Tides and won the Art Director Guild’s Lifetime Achievement award in 2009.

Other movies include Hitchcock’s The Wrong Man (1956), Bad Company (1972), Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) as well as Biloxi Blues (1988), Blow Out (1981) and Conspiracy Theory (1997).

He also designed operas in New York, wrote and directed his own play called The Steagle in 1971 and released a book called Final Cut.
