Fun Fridays – Director’s Favourite Films – Maggie Carey

 Hello Film Doctor Friends.

So how was your week so far? Productive? Enjoyable? We want to keep spirits high, despite the gloomy weather of late – so this Fun Friday comes with a comical flavour, tying in with the UK theatre premiere of “The To Do List”

Director Maggie Carey is turning the high school sex comedy on its head, to tackle the subject from a girl’s point of view. In numerous interviews Carey has shared “You write what you know, and I really know 1993 and Boise, Idaho very well. –  I had my journals from that time, which I read to refresh my memory of being a teenage girl.”

So what else has inspired her?

“I love the whole genre of Superbad-type comedy” (, 25 July 2013)

  • Dazed and Confused (1993, dir. Richard Linklater) –  “It’s one of my favorite movies” (interview with Jette Kernion, 30 July 2013,
  • Pretty in Pink (1986, dir. John Hughes) – “I also grew up on John Hughes movies — Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles — so I love that genre.” (interview with Jette Kernion, 30 July 2013,
  • Cinema Six (2012, dir. Mark Potts) – **N.B. Maggie Carey stars in Pott’s “Cinema Six” – Bill [Hader] and I are huge Mark Potts fans. I met him at the Austin Film Festival. I had a short film playing, and he had this hilarious short film about — what was it? He wanted his parents not to get a divorce, so he was trying to get money for his mom to get a boob job — something like that.” (interview with Jette Kernion, 30 July 2013)

And as an extra fun Fun Friday topping, we welcome the new British musical “Sunshine On Leith”  – bringing to life the songs of The Proclaimers – and look back on its Director Dexter Fletcher
