Fun Fridays – Director’s Favourite Films – Kathryn Bigelow

Hi Film Folk!

Today sees the UK release of Zero Dark Thirty, directed by THE Queen of women directors (the first to win an Academy Award for Best Director).

So who do you think The Film Doctor Team have chosen for our Fun Fridays?

That’s right: Kathryn Bigelow.

Kathryn Bigelow

Ms. Bigelow is renowned for her macho action movies (Blue Steel, Point Break, Strange Days) and for breaking boundaries for female directors (although much work is to be done to flip the exception and the rule!)

In her own words:

“If there’s specific resistance to women making movies, I just choose to ignore that as an obstacle for two reasons: I can’t change my gender, and I refuse to stop making movies. It’s irrelevant who or what directed a movie, the important thing is that you either respond to it or you don’t. There should be more women directing; I think there’s just not the awareness that it’s really possible. It is.”

Here is Kathryn’s list:

1. The Wild Bunch

2. Mean Streets

3. Lawrence of Arabia

4. The Collected Works of Alfred Hitchcock

5. The Terminator

(List from Rotten Tomatoes)

Zero Dark Thirty opens nationwide today…..and Lincoln too, so check out Steven Spielberg’s Favourites!
