Fun Fridays – Director’s Favourite Films – Ruben Fleischer
Hello Film Doctor friends!
As the star-packed (Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling , Josh Brolin – dare we say more?) crime thriller Gangster Squad finally hits the big screen, we turn to its director Ruben Fleischer for our weekly dosage of inspirational movies.
Although he exploded onto the scene with horror comedy Zombieland , Mr. Fleischer shows great affinity for the “gangster genre” and psychological thrillers. Here are some of his favourite films:
Chinatown (1974, dir. Roman Polanski)
The Godfather (1972, dir. Francis Ford Coppola)
The Untouchables (1987, dir. Brian De Palma)
Goodfellas (1990, dir. Martin Scorsese)
and all of the cult Coen Brothers’ films: Raising Arizona (1987), Miller’s Crossing (1990), Barton Fink (1991), The Hudsucker Proxy (1994), Fargo (1996), The Big Lebowski (1998), No Country for Old Men (2007) – “I’ve said it before. It’s like – I got to stop saying it, but yeah, they’re my favorites and I feel like there’s no one better at making movies than them.” (Ruben Fleischer interview, Oct 2011)
Gangster Squad is in UK cinemas from Thursday, 10 January 2013.
